Things to do in summer for good oral care
Warm weather & seasonal changes can actually result in teeth problems. Hence, maintaining a good oral care routine is a must during the summer in order to achieve good oral health.
With some preventive measures and a little care, it is possible to keep your teeth brighter like shining weather. Here are some tips to maintain your teeth healthily during the summer.
1) Avoid dehydration
Staying hydrated not only helps to avoid heat-related problems or dizziness but also benefits your teeth. If your mouth becomes dry, it will turn into a breeding ground for acidic waste and bacteria, especially when you consume sugary sodas & eating foods that are sticky. This is because sticky foods get stuck between your teeth easily.
If you drink more water, it will keep you hydrated without dryness in your mouth. This also enables more secretion of saliva and helps wash away sugar, food particles, and bacteria. Even saliva can actively help remineralize and repair weak tooth enamel.
2) Never bite or chew ice
No doubt! Your eyes search for ice during the summer. But you have to be careful while trying to chew it. Frozen ice may chip away your tooth enamel and also dislodge or crack a tooth. Any dental appliances or dental work in your mouth can even get damaged.
To avoid this, dissolve the ice into a cup of water and drink it as cool water rather than biting or chewing it.
3) Safeguard your lips
Exposure of lips to the sun can increase the risk of lip cancer. To protect your lips, a lip balm can be used. Make sure you are using a lip balm that has at least 15 SPF. Find a lip balm that has wide spectrum coverage so that you can protect your lips from both UVB and UVA rays. Reapply the balm many times for maximum protection.
4) Limit Sugary foods
Ice cream or soda is good to sip during the hot summer but do not overdo it. Remember to brush always after consuming sugary foods. Sugar can worsen tooth sensitivity and creates symptoms like gum sores or toothache in advance. It is best to limit sugary foods and follow flossing and brushing habits.
5) Consume foods recommended for teeth
Foods like grapes and apples naturally take care of our teeth. Calcium-rich foods like eggs, dairy, beef, chicken, and fish offer vitamin A and C as well as fluoride for our teeth. Fruits such as grapefruits and orange and foods like bananas, spinach, and carrots strengthen our teeth and enamel.
6) Be Careful while playing
Summer games such as beach volleyball, diving board, theme parks, etc., are always fun. At the same time, you should be very careful while playing these kinds of games. Dental injuries may happen without any notice. Always wear a mouthguard before playing rough games.
