Teeth Scaling
Teeth Scaling is an in-office dental cleaning activity performed by a dental doctor or oral hygienist. It is a simple procedure used to remove infected deposits like plaque and deep stains above and below the gum line over the teeth surfaces. The dental scaling procedure differs from standard cleaning treatments as the scaling/root planning procedure goes much deeper and eliminates harmful deposits.
Why teeth scaling treatment is necessary?
Dental calculus (plaque build-up) is a soft deposit accumulated with many causes like improper brushing techniques, saturated foods, acidic drinks, etc. This provides an enabling atmosphere for gum diseases to develop, followed by loosening of gums, pyorrhea, and eventually end in tooth loss.
The scaling treatment addresses gum diseases and its damaging effects on teeth in advance.
How is the scaling procedure done?
It can be performed in 2 ways say manual scaling and ultrasonic scaling.
- Manual Scaling involves removing the stains and sticky deposits with fine instruments called curettes or hand scalars.
- Ultrasonic Scaling involves a specialized device called ULTRASONIC SCALAR which uses high vibrational energy around 25,000 to 40,000 Hertz with a water spray.
How long does the procedure take?
Dental scaling is not a time-consuming procedure. It typically takes half an hour to one hour to complete. You can leave the clinic once the treatment is finished.
Is dental scaling & root planning painful?
Teeth scaling does not cause pain. If you have thick tartar deposits, you will encounter modest pain and bleeding. They go on their own once the procedure gets over.
Likewise, the thick and adamant tartar deposits lead to inflammation in gums for a few days following the treatment.
Will teeth scaling damage my teeth?
No. teeth scaling does not weaken your teeth or cause gaps between them.
There is a common myth about dental scaling that it will move our teeth and make them fragile. Teeth Scaling and Root Planning do not scrape your teeth’s outer surfaces. You will notice mild bleeding during the treatment and encounter moderate teeth sensitivity for 2 to 3 days only. It occurs as the concealed part enclosed with calculus is revealed after the treatment. It is a common follow-up. You need not worry or scare about it.
Likewise, removing the calculus accumulated between the teeth gaps will make the patient feel a new gap formed between the teeth but it is not the fact.
Can dental scaling whiten our teeth?
No. Dental Scaling removes stains and other sticky depositions whilst keeping the teeth’s actual color.
What to expect after the treatment?
Your teeth might become sensitive to hot & cold substances for the first 24 to 48 hours. Likely, you might feel your teeth have become a little loose for some time. Some people notice bleeding and swelling in gums for a few days after the treatment.
They are normal aftereffects and the prescribed medicines, mouthwashes, desensitizing toothpaste help you to ease such discomforts.
How much do teeth scaling cost?
The deep cleaning treatment cost varies with the complicacy of the infection and it ranges from 1500 to 2000 INR.
