Throwback to decades back, our households were devoid of these fancy bright brushes, and yes, most definitely no sight of these electric brushes doing the rounds. Most of us, if not all, would have had the opportunity to have seen our elders using neem sticks to brush their teeth.

Before you scratch your head to understand how in the world does that actually gives out the same effect as the soft bristles where companies spend millions on R&D, let’s take a look at the benefits of using neem for your teeth.

1) Ayurvedic Properties of Neem

Neem has long been used in the good books of history as an inevitable source of herb and ayurvedic medicine for various ailments, especially for the goodness of dental care. The antibacterial properties of neem are evident in keeping the gums and teeth healthy and also eliminating the bad odor to an extent.

If you are yet to be convinced to use neem twigs to brush your teeth, here’s a list of reasons why you can use neem for better oral care.

2) Alkaline level

Brushing your teeth regularly with neem twigs will keep a check on the alkaline levels in your saliva thus contributing to the remineralizing of the enamel and fortifying its strength.

It also plays a pivotal role in preventing cavities, thus ensuring its role in oral care.

3) Eliminates Bad Breath

Neem is an excellent remedy for bad breath. Apart from brushing, boil neem leaves in ½ cup of water for a brief time and use it as a natural flosser to clean your mouth. This does not only keep your mouth fresh but also helps in culling the bacteria.

4) Cleans the teeth

Just in case if you are not very comfortable with twigs like how one feels alien to a chopstick, there’s always a plan B. Take dried neem leaves and grind them into a fine paste. Now take one tbsp of baking soda and mix it well with baking powder and use this as a paste to brush your teeth. You will be surprised with the result after a month of regular use.

5) Treating Swollen Gums

Neem twigs or sticks are an excellent remedy for toothaches and swollen gums. The antifungal bacteria in neem helps in removing the germs in the gum thus helping it stay healthy and secure.

Also, frequent use of neem twigs or powder can help in relieving chronic toothache to a considerable extent.

6) Prevents Plaque

Accumulation of plaque in the gums surrounding the teeth is one of the primary reasons for a never-ending list of dental complications including gum abscesses. The antibacterial properties of neem help in preventing the formation of plaque and also mouth ulcers.

Takeaways:

One can’t rule out the countless benefits of adding neem or neem sticks as an option to the everyday dental routine. This does not only relieve the teeth of any complications but also helps in preventing any problems from recurring in the future.
